Lunch break with Cooper's Hawk

Looking out our office window yesterday afternoon, we spotted a hawk having lunch. After doing a brief web search, we've tentatively identified the bird as a Cooper's Hawk. Here's a one-minute video of the hawk eating its prey.

Charles Datlen took some of the video through the office windows and then went downstairs to obtain an unimpeded view of the bird. We aren't really sure what the lunch entree was; but was probably a bird that hit the window.

The shots taken from inside show how the hawk expands its wings and tail to create a tent around the prey. Our guess is that this behavior has two benefits:

1) The prey is less visible to competitors and univited guests.

2) The hawk appears bigger and more imposing while dining.

Our offices is on the second floor of the Southern Centers office building at 1500 Cordova Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The office is on the water and also has trees along the sides of the building. We've had sightings of all sorts of birds and sometimes even nests. We thank our neighbors at Yachting Magazine for letting us film from one of their windows.

The dramatic music is from our favorite stock music vendor freshmusic.com and the track is "Moment of Conquest."

If you know more about hawks than we do, please feel free to leave a comment. We are always fascinated by the wildlife around us. If you want to see a more playful Cooper's Hawk, check out this link to photos of a juvenille hanging out on a pool floaty.
