Synthetic paper: A durable and waterproof printing alternative

Hold this brochure in your hands and it looks and feels just like regular paper - but it's waterproof. A great choice for marine printing needs.

The new User Guide and Instructions for the Mastclimber from ATN is printed on waterproof and tear-resistant synthetic paper.  For the reader, the paper looks and feels just like ordinary paper. However, it should get wet (a likely scenario for this retail marine product) the paper will not wrinkle, the ink will not run.

The Mastclimber is a product that enables sailors to easily ascend the mast. Each of these products shipped by ATN will have a User Guide included. In the past, in order to achieve a high degree of durability and water resistance, lamination was the practical solution. Lamination, however, was costly, and over time delaminated and deteriorated in appearance with time and use.

The development and widespread acceptance of synthetic paper, has provided a new alternative for printing projects that need to stand up to water and wear. The cost of synthetic paper is higher than that of standard wood pulp based paper; but it is cheaper than wood-based paper combined with lamination.

Most commonly, synthetic paper is used for restaurant menus that get handled a lot or are used in outdoor venues. With the majority of our clients being on the water or marine-based, waterproof synthetic paper business cards and presentation folders are popular.

Paper made from tree pulp has had a long history and remains popular today due to its versatility, availability and reasonable price. In the past, when our clients needed a printed piece to stand up to the elements, lamination was the standard solution.  Synthetic paper does away with the extra step and cost required by lamination.

About the printed piece: Overall dimensions are about 6” x 10” with four-color process printing on two sides. Instructions are printed in English and in French. ATN manufactures a full line of products for the hands-on sailor.

About the synthetic paper: One manufacturer of synthetic paper is YUPO. It describes its product as "100% recyclable, tree-free, waterproof Synthetic Paper extruded from polypropylene pellets."

You are right on with the uses of synthetic paper. We recently released a new type of synthetic paper that is getting outstanding feedback from printers- Fusion Digital Paper. Please check it out at http://www.fusiondigitalpaper.com

Since the majority of our clients are literally on the water, waterproof paper is also great for presentation folders and business cards.

Synthetic paper due to its durability is also popular with restaurants for menus. They last a lot longer and keep up appearances.

Yup, I encountered this type of paper before and it was really a good replacement for other paper. This is really good in printing. Thanks for sharing and keep it up. Good luck.
