How to make the most of corporate holiday events

'Tis the season for corporate parties. Joining in holiday festivities can be an good way to maintain and develop professional relationships.

Holiday parties may include people you may already run into at other corporate, industry or trade association events. But holiday parties have a dynamic that is distinctly different to trade shows or conventions.

How to use "spirit of the season" to make the most of corporate holiday events:

  • Express thanks. This is a season for celebration, retrospection and appreciation. Thank the hosts or other guests who've benefitted you over the year. A party is a great time to say thank you. And no one thinks they've been over-appreciated.
  • Find out what the new year holds. Asking about future plans is natural at this time of year. This opens the door for you to learn what others may be up to.
  • Chat up the competition. You never know what you'll discover over eggnog.
  • Meet new people. Holiday parties have a more varied guest list than other official events. Take the time to meet the other guests. Maybe you'll find areas where your interests intersect.
  • Lighten up. Here, you aren't required to make the sale or close the deal. Take the time to have a good time and end the year on the right note.
