Cost-effective yacht photography for multiple purposes
Laser Advertising has photographed and taken video of hundreds of boats. Over the years, vessel styles have evolved, construction materials have improved, and owner tastes have become highly individualized. One thing has stayed the same: excellent photography is the single best way to market a yacht for sale or charter.
Professional, appealing yacht photos open so many opportunities for yacht promotion: editorial publication in print and on-line magazines, lush brochures, captivating websites. But random, point-and-shoot methods can result in appalling yacht photos that can be a real turn-off.
If you want to economize on yacht photography, there are real ways you can do so without skimping on a professional photo shoot. Here are practical steps the yacht owner, yacht broker or charter yacht agent can take to reduce the cost of yacht photo shoot:
- Prepare the boat to its best advantage. Make it sparkle, make it shine, make it desirable. Put out some nice flowers, set out a colorful fruit bowl, mix a drink for the aft deck, set out some beach towels, smooth down the bedding. Make it easy for the viewer of the photos to imagine that this boat will make their dreams come true.
- Get anything unattractive out of sight. Empty the trash cans, conceal the rolls of toilet paper, get the engineers tools off the deck. Believe it or not, we've seen photos taken by brokers where there is trash in the galley and rolls of toilet paper "stored" on a guest bed.
- Are you including crew members? Make sure they are wearing appropriate uniforms and are well-groomed. Tatoos should be concealed and jewelry avoided.
- Make the yacht avaialable! It's understandable that owners and guests need to use the boat and that crew needs time off and that brokers have other things to do; but time does need to be set aside -- with extra time available in case of poor weather.
- Consider all the ways that the photos will be used before you contact the photographer. It's most economical to shoot all of the important photos at one time. In an effort to save money, some people will schedule a minimal shoot and then realize later that important shots were not taken and a new shoot will be required.
- Ask your photographer's opinion and suggestions on content and angles.
- You know the boat best, be sure to point out the best selling features or owner's favorite views.
- Hire a photographer who understands boats and the market, things will go much smoother.
